What is Red Nose Day?! Red Nose Day is a day to raise awareness and money to help kids who need help the most here in the United States and around the world. “Red Nose Day is on a mission to lift kids out of poverty and has raised over $1 billion globally in the last 25 years.” You can find more information on the RL Red Nose Day at their official site RedNoseDay.Org.

I wanted to do this type of post because helping kids everywhere is important. It’s true when they say the children are the future, because they truly are. It was true when it was us, and it’ll be true for our children and grandchildren and so on. We need them to thrive and grow, be able to learn, someday soon they will be the future leaders of this world. Red Nose Day is something I’ve heard about for a while and I honestly forgot that it was today. I had donated at my local Walgreens the last time I was there, but even just that didn’t seem like enough. So I wanted to do more, and as an SL blogger it seemed like a logical step to come here and share my idea with all of you. Continue reading

The Empress’ New Clothes: A Couture Fairy Tale

Hello, hello!

Long post today so I’m going to keep my chatter to a minimum (although if anyone is in  the MOOD to listen to me ramble endlessly about anything, feel free to find me, Portia Pexington, in world 😉 ). I freaking LOVE styling challenges, maybe I’ve said this before, and anything that allows me to mix fantasy and fashion together is bound to get my immediate and undivided attention.

The concept for this challenge is simple: style and photograph a fairytale inspired couture outfit featuring Wicca’s Wardrobe designs.  For my first picture, I re-imagined Charles Perrault‘s Little Red Riding Hood and had a grand time giving Lil Red a modern spin. Even when I’m working with contemporary fashion, I try to give my outfits a bit of extra finesse; a big part of fashion for me is finding ways to blur those lines between genres, to do something that speaks to my experience as a role player and lover of many different styles without sacrificing my aesthetic standards.

Kind of a snooty thing to say, huh? Well, have you ever heard Hans Christian Andersen’s story of the Emperor’s New Clothes?

The Empress' New Clothes - SO FANCY

I’ve gone ahead and pasted it below, only altering a few things to allow for an Empress instead of an Emperor and some female presence in the story overall. It really is a funny story about how easy it is for people to be fooled when their pride is on the line and, maybe I’ll catch a bit of heat for this, I feel like it’s applicable to some of what we see in Second Life fashion as well. It’s so easy to get caught up in what one person or another TELLS us looks good; so easy to just nod and go along with people who feel like theirs is the only opinion that matters and if you happen to disagree with them, well, you’re wrong. Couture Fairytale ~ Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in a village near the forest.  Whenever she went out, the little girl wore a red riding cloak, so everyone in the village called her Little Red Riding Hood….

Okay, so this isn’t exactly a fairy tale rendering of ‘Little Red’ but I had SO MUCH FUN putting this outfit together! Wicca Merlin of Wicca’s Wardrobe and Windlight Magazine issued this challenge to Second Lifers and, man, it’s a good one! Continue reading

Thematic Tuesday – What’s Your Trope?

This post could have been about a lot of things. I considered writing about what it takes to put an outfit like this together, how rewarding it feels to bring something cohesive together that feels new and, best of all, exciting! How easy it is to get stuck blogging one  thing or another in Second Life but, gosh, how none of us need to settle. Not for one flipping minute!

So instead of writing another fashion review post I want to talk about another place to find inspiration because, and I hope you believe me when I say this, even the most creative people breathing need a bit of help sometimes. 😉

Action Fashionista II.png

A good chunk of my ability to style fashion pieces to work within a scene comes from my love of role playing – once I have a scene in mind, most of the concept work is already done for me – but even non-RPers can draw from personal experience to do this. Continue reading

A Few Last Words

.. over here anyway! I’m not quitting SL or even just blogging, but I AM moving to a fancy new website. 🙂

There are a number of reasons for this, some of which I mention in my maiden post for Mask and Mien. I’m sad to relinquish the following I have with WordPress.com and the number of feeds I’ve belonged to (those that are still functioning more than a year after my last post here, anyway). Still, this is a good thing. A happier blogger makes for better pictures and more frequent posts, right?

So welcome to my very last wordpress post! I’ve decided to redo my own Beauty Base Zero challenge because, let’s face it, 1) two years is SUCH a long time in Second Life and 2) I’m sort of excited to show how much my avatar has changed since my last posts here.

Writer’s Blog-err.. Writer’s Block Challenge!

We have ALL been here. Some of us more recently, some less so. Some more frequently, some only INfrequently.  Writer’s blog .. blog .. BLOCK (I keep typing ‘blog,’ wth) is a very real issue, even if you don’t write much to accompany your pictures, you may still find the thought of posting in your blog uninspiring.

My last post was February 25th. It’s May 19th. I think it’s fair to say that there’s a problem here.

So what do we do when life is busy, stressful, and generally not conducive to thoughtful introspection?

We find a new challenge, of course!

So here it is: My challenge to YOU, oh bloggers of SL, is to write a single blog post. I’m going to help you get through this in less than ten steps. Observe! Continue reading

Zero Lag Thirty ~ Blog Challenge and Part Two of Stylin’ Ain’t Easy

Hey everyone, and welcome to ‘Zero Lag Thirty,’ part two of my ‘Stylin’ Ain’t Easy’ blog series!

BLOGGERS: This is my next challenge for you! I want to see your best, least laggy outfit; help spread the word that Zero Lag can still look amazing. ❤

Today we’re going to explore the challenge of trying to move around in Second Life. We’ve all fallen prey to the SL ‘Lag Monster’ and while sometimes the situation is completely out of our control, sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes we’re our own worst enemy.

So whether you’re scaling down (har har) to get ready for competitive racing like me or you’d just like to be able to cross the floor of your favourite club without rubberbanding, you might want to read on. Watch and learn, Grasshopper.

Blogger Challenge: What’s Your Beauty Base Zero? (Part One ~ Stylin’ Ain’t Easy)

Blogging isn’t easy.

I’m not writing this post to complain, far from it, but I would like to highlight the amount of work stylists undertake when putting an outfit together. Blogging said outfits is another challenge (but gosh, I love it) because the purpose is to highlight clothing in a specific, and often individual, fashion. The blog posts we love best seem effortless and perfect; it looks like a snapshot right out of someone’s second life. In truth, I’m certain that it’s the result of hours of work from beginning to end and I appreciate this process SO much. Behind every blogger, you’ll likely find a thorough and thoughtful individual who is just in love with SL fashion and wants to share this fascination with the world. Like me. 🙂

So this is the first installment of what I’m calling my “Stylin’ Ain’t Easy” tribute to SL blogging. It’s not definitive but it is a peek at how I operate. The first step for me is what I have named my BB-0 (Beauty Base Zero); it’s a term I’ve pillaged from book two of The Hunger Games trilogy because the concept was dead on. It’s where you start, imagining your nails are perfect, your hair is tied back and you’re staring into a mirror, or your closet, wondering what the heck you’re going to wear today. Continue reading

Love! ~ Mon Tissu Blogger Challenge (pt. 2)

I may be a total hippie for saying it, but there is nothing in this world as important to me as love. It doesn’t have to be the sort of True Love we read about, the sort rhapsodized in song and story (although gosh, it’s pretty freaking wonderful when you find it); it’s perfectly perfect to love your family and your cat, your best friends and your favourite pair of shoes. Love a moment in time, carry it around with you forever, and smile as you revisit it an hour, a day, or ten years later. Something I noticed this morning is the love that goes into the designs at {Mon Tissu}; the care and thought and attention to detail that -seems- obvious at first until you look closer and realize that it’s more than that. Look at the chair in this picture – it’s pretty, right? Now look at the pattern in my shoes and this gorgeous bag.

Realize how lovely and profound this is.

Feel the love, my lovelies.

Mhmm, the larger picture. ❤ Continue reading
